Unlike the attention-grabbing fads that cyclically overtake social media, Scandinavian style relies on multipurpose, evergreen pieces used on rotation throughout the seasons. These pieces should be comfortable for regular wear and tailored to your style preferences, so you feel good no matter what you put on.
Perhaps most importantly, basics should be just that: basic. Before hunting for your dream statement items, build a foundation of pieces that can be worn in various combinations. To bring style into the equation, Scandinavian people approach layering strategically. “It might sound cliché, but there’s nothing I love more about winter outfits than putting together cool layers,” Ravn says.
For an easy first layer, thermal pieces—fitted and lightweight but protective. From there, make your pick of basics, such as a good pair of pants or a snug sweater that, hopefully, provides some insulation. “I think this season, layering cardigans in different colors will be a big thing—and it keeps you warm,” Ravn says about what could be the season’s go-to trend.
With the practical elements taken care of—read: a base that works to keep you warm—you have the freedom to be playful with your outermost layer. “Long oversized coats and a pair of boots will always be my go-to during wintertime,” Ravn shares. If the weather allows, skip the bulky parka for a comparatively chic coat that complements your outfit.
“Less Is More”
Yes, maximalism has been a major theme in recent trends— think of jewelry stacking, layers of contrasting patterns, charms, and the resurgence of animal print. While trinkets and extravagance will always have a place in fashion, stick to a simpler blueprint to create Scandinavian-inspired outfits.
“We have a way of making styling seem effortless and really embody this ‘less is more’ energy,” Ravn says. “Even the most basic outfit somehow still comes together as a chic look: a ‘put-together woman’ who has her life on track. But I would definitely say that ‘less is more’ is probably one of the key notes.”
In practice, this does not mean sacrificing all personality. Instead, be pickier with your accents. Opt for a whimsical scarf à la Acne Studios, a bold pair of sunglasses or statement shoes that pop. Maintaining an understated foundation for your outfit will allow any personal touches to shine with intentionality.
Note The Silhouette

“We, in general, are pretty known for design, whether it’s clothing or interior-wise,” Ravn says, “due to our elegant and simple silhouettes and warm tones which shine through in our styling and homes.”
Scandinavian style also maintains elements of classic design. Sleek coats with cinched waists, ballerina flats or slip skirts can be easily integrated into a variety of outfits. At the same time, there is a clear inclination towards oversized fits. Sturdy knitwear, roomy blazers and flowing trousers are pieces on regular rotation.
That said, Scandinavian style is not defined by its adherence to a specific interpretation of gender norms. Instead, the focus is on simple—wearable—silhouettes that balance minimalism, personal expression and practicality.
