Olivia Rodrigo’s Hussein Chalayan archive-inspired dress literally unravels under the rain—and it feels like déjà vu.
Gen Z icon Olivia Rodrigo kicked off “The Unraveled” tour on September 25 at Hartford’s PeoplesBank Arena. Set against a grand set that moved between seasons, the show included a big fashion experiment: a dress that dissolved under the rain. The mastermind behind the look? Fashion innovator and runway spectacle master Hussein Chalayan.
Taking Unraveled Literally
In one of the most emotionally driven and spectacular stage stunts of 2026, Olivia Rodrigo performed her chart-topping single “The Cure” as her dress melted away. Yes, you read that right. Her crisp white dress melted away.
The buzzy stage moment took place toward the end of Rodrigo’s “The Unraveled” tour opening night. Following various wardrobe changes that perfectly captured the mood of each set, Rodrigo stepped on stage to perform a selection of emotional ballads. Her outfit of choice was a sleeveless mini dress with a collared bodice and pleated skirt that channeled the nurse uniform she sported in the music video for “The Cure.”
As Rodrigo performed “The Cure” at the end of the set, artificial rain poured down the stag. The water slowly drenched the dress and eventually melted away as the song faded in the background. The fashion experiment revealed a corseted bodysuit underneath as a literal interpretation of the tour’s name.
While the moment was significant on its own, Rodrigo and her team’s ability to reference culture and collaborate with big names across the creative spectrum brought this music and fashion crossover to the next level.
After all, Hussein Chalayan, the mind behind the dissolving design, has made a name for himself as a fashion intellectual whose tech-couture pushes the boundaries of textile performance.
If this is your first time hearing the name, we got your back.
Chalayan is a Turkish Cypriot–British designer and Central Saint Martins graduate whose work explores fashion as a storytelling medium through complex and rigorously crafted techniques.
For his graduation collection, Chalayan took a literal approach to textile experimentation and storytelling. Based on the story of a woman whose attempts to combine Eastern and Cartesian philosophical currents anger a crowd that executes and buries her, the designer reproduced garment deterioration by burying his designs with iron filings in a garden.
Chalayan then examined themes such as migration, memory and nostalgia, slowly embracing technology. In the late 2000s, the designer employed circuits, chips and mechanical tech to create clothing that transformed into screen projectors or dresses fashioned after Victorian-era clothing that self-transformed into modern silhouettes.
Then came the 2010s
In his Spring/Summer 2016 show, which informed Rodrigo’s melting dress, Chalayan staged a runway inspired by Cuban menswear. The runway culminated with a performance where models stood underneath a shower to reveal the collection’s final looks: two Swarovski crystal-embedded dresses.
Chalayan, alongside Rodrigo’s styling stylist duo Chloe and Chenelle Delgadillo, reprised the same concept on stage, recreating an iconic moment in fashion history at one of this year’s most anticipated music tours.
