Trailblazing South Korean act BIGBANG kicked off the group’s 20th anniversary celebrations with a bang—pun intended. The trio, featuring legendary singer-songwriters, performers and fashion icons G-Dragon, Taeyang and Daesung, made a long-overdue Coachella debut, achieving a milestone they were meant to fulfill back in 2020, when the festival was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
BIGBANG is Back
On April 12, the K-pop group brought the heat to the Outdoor Theatre stage on the last time slot of weekend one. The performance, highly anticipated by music enthusiasts and fans of Asian entertainment, marked the group’s first major international performance in nearly a decade—though BIGBANG had a brief surprise reunion at the MAMA Awards in 2024.
For an hour, fans attending and tuning in for the show watched BIGBANG revisiting career-defining hits such as “Lies,” “Fantastic Baby” and “BANG BANG BANG,” with the dexterity and maturity proper of a 20-year-old band. Their 17-song set offered a musical journey through their genre-bending discography, which merges hip-hop, EDM, and R&B, among other sounds.
With a tightly packed crowd as witnesses—the Outdoor Theatre is the second largest stage at the festival—BIGBANG delivered the stardom-cementing quality that first launched them to global acclaim. The group displayed the high energy and attention to craft that have set them apart since their debut in 2006. Finely-tuned choreography that felt effortless and purposeful; pitch-perfect vocals and genuine enthusiasm to stand on stage after a prolonged hiatus made every moment of the show memorable and exhilarating.
Balancing Group Performance and Individual Spotlight
While cohesive group performances with matching visuals dominated most of the set, there was space for individual spotlights and cultural recognition. Taeyang, who has built a reputation as a sultry and deft vocalist—the kind people swooned about in the turn of the century—performed “Ringa Linga,” one of his biggest 2010s hits.

Meanwhile, frontman and multi-hyphenate star G-Dragon delivered a fashionable performance of “POWER,” off his most recent musical project, Übermensch. Clad in the eclectic fashion that elevated him to fashion icon ranks, Kwon Ji-yong leaned into reggae and Latin-infused sounds with an arrangement that had everyone at Outdoor Theatre dancing and grooving.
After a joint performance by childhood friends G-Dragon and Taeyang, Daesung introduced Coachella to Korean trot. Following a movement that has seen musicians reclaiming their cultural roots—Bad Bunny is perhaps the best example of musicians vindicating traditional music on the global stage—Daesung brought the upbeat “Over the Limit” and “Look at Me, Defector” to California. The cultural moment was accompanied by a display of the Hangul language in the background.
The Fashion Did Not Go Unnoticed
As mandatory for a group vastly recognized for shaping K-pop style in the early aughts and beyond, the fashion was one of the night’s highlights. G-Dragon wore statement-making items from brands like Willy Chavarria, Dries Van Noten, Chanel (which he represents as one of the very few male brand ambassadors) and Jacob & Co., the luxury jewelry brand regularly designing exclusive pieces and collaborating with the singer for special drops.

Taeyang repped the shirtless fashion he pioneered in K-pop spaces and made his signature. His looks leaned into rockstar territory, featuring leather, silver jewelry and gilded items. Among the brands he wore was Chrome Hearts, which BIGBANG popularized as standard stage fashion for Korean acts.
Daesung, on the other hand, kept things effortless, opting for classic stage looks featuring denim, tank tops and leather jackets from Chrome Hearts and Ann Demeulemeester. Though the singer wore comparatively simpler outfits, his attention to detail and adherence to trends like the dangling bandana and sheer dressing made each look stage-appropriate and memorable.

After teasing future endeavours and thanking fans for their unwavering support, BIGBANG concluded their hour-long set with “Still Life.” The emotional performance tugged at fans’ heartstrings as the group opted for keeping the voice of former bandmate T.O.P., who withdrew from the lineup in 2023, in the song.
