Korean rapper Jennie Kim made her return to the 2025 Met Gala dressed in head-to-toe Chanel. Fashion enthusiasts and insiders acknowledged her expertly tailored clothes, matching accessories and, of course, her beauty look.
We zoomed our lens closer and recognized a spring beauty trend, perfect for anyone to recreate: lip sculpting.
What’s Lip Sculpting?
Over the past decade, Jennie has almost exclusively sported a soft, natural lip line. The technique blends effortlessly with Jennie’s low visual weight. However, given the importance of the occasion, Jennie switched things up for the first Monday in May. Complementing her Chanel suit, the “Mantra” star sported a sculpted lip that easily stood out even from afar.

Fortunately, we have left one-dimensional, overlined lips in the 2010s. The current lip sculpting technique includes natural-toned lipstick, lip liners, and gloss. Instead of painting over the natural lip line, makeup artists focus on sculpting their client’s natural pout.
To recreate the trend, outline the lip line with a deep lip liner. For this step, lip liners with brown pigment work best because the neutral color creates a faux shadow. After lining the lips, apply a lipstick shade one to two shades lighter. The light lipstick creates contrast against the deep lip liner. Lastly, top off the lip colors with lip gloss. The shine blends the contour and creates a juicy, plump appearance.

As mentioned above, Jennie has been rarely spotted with harsh lip liner. However, her makeup look showcased how she modifies trends to work for her features. Jennie’s sculpted lips featured terracotta products with subtle contrast. Plus, her lip gloss adhered to her usual makeup routine. The Seoulite’s glam was an expert class on how to try out a trend without compromising your aesthetic.
It helped, of course, that her glam matched the energy of her outfit, a Chanel reinterpretation of the tuxedo that commanded everyone’s attention. The look was nicely paired with a hat, stilettos and quintessential Chanel staples, including pearl accessories and a camelia brooch.
